Re-tipping diamond tools

Find out why diamond segments wear over time and how our re-tipping service can save you money while being a sustainable solution.

How diamond tools work or why segments wear over time

Each diamond tool, be it a blade or core drill bit, has a diamond segment. This segment has two main components - the diamonds and the bond that holds the diamonds together. When the tool is being used, the diamonds do not technically cut but grind the material. The exposed diamond crystals do the grinding work and the bond holds the diamonds in place (1). After several thousand rotations, the diamonds start to wear, crack (2) and eventually break away. At the same time the bond wears and eventually breaks away (3) leaving new diamonds exposed (4). This is the reason why your Holer diamond tool does not need to be sharpened (when used correctly).
This is, however, also the reason why over time and extensive use, the segments of your diamond tool wear over time. The steel core of your core drill bit or blade, however, will most likely be in great condition. This is where re-tipping comes in.

Advantages of re-tipping your diamond tool

There are two clear benefits of re-tipping your diamond tool:
Cost savings
Getting your diamond tool re-tipped is about 25% cheaper than buying a new core drill bit or blade. We stock a large variety of segments in our manufacturing facilities in Nelson and can usually turn-around your diamond tool re-tipping within 24h from receiving your tool.
Waste reduction
A steel core can be used about four to five times before it is no longer fit for re-tipping. This means a lot of raw material and energy can be saved as less new steel cores have to be produced while reducing the amount of waste at the same time.
Part of our re-tipping service is that we check the steel core before we start the re-tipping process to make sure that your rejuvenated diamond tool will perform as well as when you first got it. If we have any concerns about the steel core, we will get in touch with you.
